Ann Arbor is safest city in Michigan for pedestrians

Although there has been much debate in the Ann Arbor area over crosswalk ordinances in recent years, it appears that the city's lawmakers and planners may know what they are doing. A recently released report states that Ann Arbor is the safest metro area in Michigan for pedestrians.

The report was conducted by the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership and Transportation for America. Researchers from these organizations compiled data about fatal pedestrian accidents and the number of people who walk to work to come up with a safety comparison.

Of 15 metro areas in Michigan, Flint was ranked the most dangerous for pedestrians.

Ann Arbor officials have said that the study shows the city's efforts to increase the safety of roads and sidewalks for all--by painting bike lanes and installing pedestrian crossing lights for example--are working.

However, although Ann Arbor may be the safest city in Michigan for pedestrians and bicyclists, the number of vehicle-pedestrian and vehicle-bike crashes have increased in recent years. For example, in 2009, 43 pedestrians were struck by vehicles in Ann Arbor. By 2011, this number had swelled to 63. In 2007, 34 vehicle-bicycle accidents took place; in 2009, there were 63.

It remains very important for drivers to remember that they must share the roads. For example, whether or not bike lanes exist, bicyclists have a legal right to ride in the road.

In a news release, the city said that drivers should refrain from texting and driving, which is illegal, as well as pass cyclists safely and provide several feet of space between their vehicle and a bicyclist.

Pedestrians, too, can do their part to avoid being struck by a car by wearing light clothing at night and utilizing designated crosswalks.
