Fruitport Township officials study dangerous intersection

Residents of Fruitport Township, Michigan, may be well aware that the intersection of Harvey Street and East Sternberg Road is prone to car accidents. In fact, back in March, MLive wrote a news article about how the intersection ranks among the most dangerous in the county. Since that article was published, Fruitport Township officials set out to discover what makes that intersection so dangerous, but the results are somewhat puzzling.

Fruitport's crash data shows that most of the accidents at that intersection occur in February, in clear weather, between 1 and 2 p.m. Most of the crashes do not involve alcohol or drugs, and they are typically rear-end accidents involving two cars.

Although this crash data has been compiled, it is not yet clear just what is leading people to get into accidents at this intersection so frequently. Often, when a certain intersection hosts a large number of accidents, it is due to some sort of design flaw in the intersection. Sometimes the intersection needs a light, stop sign, turn arrow, more or fewer lanes, etc.

In this case, it does not appear that officials have yet drawn any conclusions about risk factors at Harvey Street and East Sternberg Road, which boasted the second most crashes in the area in both 2011 and 2009.

In some cases, when someone is injured in a car accident in an area where the roads or signage were not properly maintained and held up to certain standards of safety, it is possible to hold the city or town liable. So, this as well as a duty to protect public safety should encourage public officials in Michigan and elsewhere to continue to study accident-prone intersections and do everything they can to keep car accidents at a minimum.
