Michigan boy, 13, killed in car accident, mom and sisters injured

An Ishpeming, Michigan, family sustained a major loss this weekend. On Friday, a car accident in Middle Inlet, Wisconsin, resulted in the death of a 13-year-old Michigan boy, and his mother and two sisters were seriously injured.

The driver in the other vehicle involved in the crash has been arrested and charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. He reportedly had a blood alcohol content of more than three times the legal limit at the time of the accident.

The head-on collision took place at about 11:30 p.m. while the family was driving south on U.S. Highway 41, when it was struck by a pickup truck driving north with its headlights off.

The boy's mother, 44, was driving. She and the two daughters, 16 and 17, were taken to the hospital.

The driver of the pickup truck had reportedly left a bar just before the accident. Employees at the bar have said the man was 'buzzed' when he left, according to the Marquette Mining Journal, but that he appeared in fine shape to drive.

The man now faces multiple charges in relation to the fatal collision, two of which are each punishable by up to 40 years in jail.

The surviving victims of this car accident and their loved ones may also choose to hold this driver accountable in civil court. Doing so can result in compensation for medical and funeral expenses, as well as lost wages and pain and suffering.

Additionally, when a bar provides alcohol to a person who later causes a drunk driving accident, that bar may sometimes be held liable for negligent actions. Of course, none of these legal options will lessen the emotional turmoil that is associated with a tragic loss, but it is important that victims of car accidents receive the compensation they deserve and that they hold negligent parties accountable.
