Surgical errors a possibility even for trendy cosmetic procedures

Medical surgery and invasive medical procedures hold a certain amount of inherent risk and doctors performing these operations can be liable for surgical errors. But what about less-invasive cosmetic medical procedures? What if those procedures are performed by someone without a medical license?

Doctors performing cosmetic procedures still make mistakes. If they do not follow the standard of care for their profession and their actions or inactions cause injury, they are as subject to medical negligence claims as any other doctor.

Illegal cosmetic procedures gone awry

Cosmetic procedures are rising in popularity. And, as with anything that is new, trendy and expensive, people often look for low-cost alternatives - even illegal options.

Illegal cosmetic procedures may be cheaper than seeing a plastic surgeon, but they are often performed by someone without a medical license and pose life-threatening risks. One woman recently died as the result of an illegal cosmetic procedure where a silicone-like material was injected into her buttocks, causing deadly blood clots.

The person who performed the injection is not a registered doctor or nurse. He has now been charged with "depraved-heart murder," which carries a life sentence. The victim apparently found the man's services online.

The suspect in this case faces serious criminal charges but could also be sued by the family of the victim for wrongful death. Doctors, or others within the medical profession, that perform these "cheap" medical procedures may also be liable in a malpractice case for not adhering to the standard of care.

Those found liable for any injuries or resulting death may have to pay for medical costs, funeral expenses, loss of income, pain and suffering, and other damages. Those that have suffered from medical malpractice should not also have to suffer the financial consequences of someone else's mistake.
