Bridge detour causes car accident concern in Quanicassee

When construction or other issues cause road closures on Michigan roads, it is up to city planners or other authorities to provide proper notice to drivers of the closures and any detours. Encountering such obstacles can be dangerous so it is important that detours are well-marked and safe.

The M-25 bridge over the Quanicassee River is currently under construction in that area and it has been reported that a detour that is supposed to be used only for local and emergency traffic is causing a car accident risk.

The bridge that is being replaced is just to the east of Tuscola and Bay county lines. A detour route for the public is a bit complicated, beginning in Bay City on M-15, and then M-138 to M-24 and finally M-25 in Unionville.

To the south of the construction, Old State Road is open but it is supposed to be used only for local emergency vehicles. Apparently, many motorists are still using that road, which is creating a risk for car accidents that could then of course impede the ability of emergency vehicles to get where they are going.

Last week there was an accident on that road that resulted in one vehicle being thrown into the water.

Further complicating matters is the fact that the bridge on that road may have structural problems and it may not be equipped to handle so much traffic. According to a news report, about 70 vehicles traveled over the Old State Road bridge in just 30 minutes last week.

While detours can be frustrating and time-consuming, it is very important for drivers to follow them--or at least not to take shortcuts by driving on roads that are labeled "emergency vehicles only." As noted on TuscolaToday.com, this is dangerous for many reasons.

Of course, cities and counties can sometimes be liable for accidents if detours and construction areas are not properly marked. It is unclear in this case whether drivers are knowingly taking an emergency-only route or whether confusion about the detour exists.
