Pedestrian killed, 2 injured in multi-car accident in Detroit

A fatal multi-car crash took place in Detroit this weekend. The accident took place early Saturday morning, just before 3 a.m. on westbound Interstate 94.

Apparently, a crashed vehicle was blocking the left lane near Mt. Elliot and a vehicle traveling westbound lost control when it tried to avoid it. The out-of-control vehicle then rear-ended another vehicle that was disabled on the right shoulder. The disabled vehicle was then pushed into a pedestrian, who happened to be the driver of the car in the initial crash. He was outside of his vehicle seeking help.

That pedestrian, a 37-year-old Lincoln Park man, was pronounced dead at the Detroit Receiving Hospital.

A passenger in one of the vehicles was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A Detroit Police Sergeant, who was off-duty, stopped to render aid at the scene of the initial crash and he was also struck by a motorist. He was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Michigan State Police are continuing to investigate these car accidents and they are looking for eyewitnesses to come forward to provide information. Multi-car collisions, or chain reaction collisions, can entail quite complicated investigations, due to the many drivers and decisions that led up to the various injuries and death.

Car accident laws regarding chain reaction collisions are quite complex, but it is often possible for the family members of victims to obtain compensation for funeral expenses, loss of future income and wages, and loss of a relationship and mental anguish. This is possible by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the negligent party or parties. Those who are injured can also often obtain compensation for their medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering by pursuing a personal injury claim against the negligent party or parties.
