Where are the most dangerous intersections in Washtenaw County?

Residents of Washtenaw County may be interested in the recently released Washtenaw Area Transportation Study, which includes a report of the most dangerous intersections in the county.

The intersections were ranked according to crash statistics from the Michigan State Police for the years 2009, 2010 and 2011, the most recent years for which data is available. The most dangerous intersection, according to the study, is Washtenaw Avenue, Carpenter Road and Hogback Road in Pittsfield Township. This intersection was the site of 135 car accidents from 2009 to 2011.

Pittsfield was actually home to five of the report's top 10 dangerous intersections.

This data will reportedly be used by the Washtenaw County Road Commission as it decides which areas need safety upgrades.

For example, the intersection of Carpenter and Packard roads was ranked ninth in the report, and in 2011 it actually had the highest number of car accidents. The Washtenaw County Road Commission has applied for various federal grants in order to install safety medians in the center of the road in that area. A number of the accidents there are apparently caused by cars that are turning left out of driveways near the intersection, and medians would prevent cars from making those turns.

Hopefully, the results of this report will lead to some real changes that will help prevent dangerous car accidents in Washtenaw County. After installing roundabouts in certain instersections in recent years, serious accidents in those locations are down by as much as 80 percent, according to the Road Commission.

It is important that the county does its part to stay on top of traffic trends and car accident statistics in order to ensure that poorly designed infrastructure is not a contributing factor in car accidents.
