Worker injured by giraffe at Michigan zoo

Many of the work-related accidents and injuries we write about in this Michigan Personal Injury Law Blog involve traditionally dangerous industries. For example, we hear a lot about accidents on construction sites and in factories and industrial workplaces. However, workplace injuries can happen anywhere. In fact, office workers often suffer repetitive stress injuries from tasks like typing.

A very unusual workplace accident took place near Battle Creek, Michigan, this week. A woman who works at the Binder Park Zoo was taken to the hospital after being stepped on by a giraffe Monday.

According to news reports, the woman apparently lost her footing and fell while she was trying to get the giraffes indoors. A giraffe then stepped on her, reportedly by accident.

Fortunately, it appears that her injuries were not very serious.

The zoo is also going to review its procedures in light of this workplace injury.

While initial reports do suggest that this was only an accident, workers' compensation benefits may be available to the woman for her related medical expenses and any time spent away from work recovering. In Michigan, all employers must carry workers' compensation insurance and it is possible to file a workers' compensation claim regardless of who is at fault for the accident.

Whether someone works in a job where there are known dangers--such as large, exotic animals--or not, it is important that all workers in Michigan know that they have rights should they suffer an on-the-job injury. Injured workers who would like more information about workers' compensation or workplace injury claims may benefit from seeking legal counsel.
