2 tragic bike accidents take place in Lower Michigan

It is very important that drivers keep a lookout for bicycles during these summer months as more and more of them hit the roads. When car vs. bicycle accidents occur, cyclists often suffer severe or even fatal injuries. It is of the utmost importance that we all share the roads together safely.

Last week, two tragic car vs. bike accidents took place in Lower Michigan; one of the accidents was a hit-and-run.

The first accident took place Thursday afternoon in Oden, when a 58-year-old was killed in a car vs. bicycle accident. The accident is currently under investigation.

The second collision took place early Friday morning in Traverse City. Police believe that the driver of either a dark pickup truck or SUV struck a bicycle from behind, dragging the 29-year-old bicyclist for about two blocks. The vehicle then drove off and police are looking for the driver.

Few further details about these car vs. bicycle accidents have been published.

Bicyclists who are injured in collisions with motor vehicles, as well as the family members of those killed in such crashes, have a right to hold to the party who is at fault responsible. Drivers who are involved in such accidents sometimes face both criminal charges and civil lawsuits. Of course, neither of these things can lessen the pain and suffering associated with such an incident, but these are options that Michigan residents have under the law in order to pursue justice.

Criminal charges are generally pressed by the state after a car vs. bicycle accident, while any personal injury or wrongful death action needs to be filed by victims or surviving loved ones.
