Fallen shipping container causes hours of delay on I-94

Some of our readers may have found themselves sitting in traffic on Thursday morning on Interstate 94 in Detroit. Cars were backed up for miles from an lane blockage between the Interstate 96 interchange and Linwood Avenue.

Break lights lit up the early morning hours while cars were directed through the far right lane. It wasn't until 7:00 that some real headway was made and the rush-hour traffic was allowed to move a little more quickly. So what was this major obstruction? It was a shipping container that fell off of a tractor-trailer and onto the highway.

How did it fall? Detroit authorities continued to investigate the accident. Questions remained about the possibility that the shipping container had hit an overpass, causing it to become dislodged from the truck. There was no confirmation on that fact or whether the container was improperly secured to the semi-truck. It was also unclear whether any injuries resulted from the truck accident.

While the cause and results of this accident remain under investigation, it raises one of the most common causes of injuries that result from a trucking accident. Whether in a rush to get going, a careless attitude for safety or even a negligent oversight, the improper loading of a truck can have disastrous results.

Imagine the damage that can result when a several-ton container lands in the path of a car or a metal spike comes loose and shoots through the window of a van. Isn't that hard to imagine, is it? While we can picture the results, there are individuals who actually experience them.
