Helpful advice for safe travel on crowded interstates

On behalf of Bredell & Bredell | Dec 14, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Roadways across the state of Michigan seem to be getting more and more dangerous. In particular, the interstate highways that crisscross the state often see high volumes of traffic at nearly all hours of the day. Driving long distances at high speeds among heavy traffic can definitely be intimidating. Here are a few ways drivers can reduce the likelihood of serious car accidents while traveling on crowded interstates.

First and foremost, never use a cellphone behind the wheel. When the cellphone dings with a new text message notification, it’s very tempting to grab the phone and type out a reply. However, a recent report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that reading or sending a text can take a driver’s eyes off the road for a minimum of five seconds. When traveling at 55 mph, this is virtually like driving the length of a football field with closed eyes. Distracted driving is incredibly dangerous and is responsible for thousands of crashes every year.

When attempting to merge onto the interstate, use the entrance ramp to accelerate to the same speed as the interstate traffic. Failing to get up to speed before merging may cause the other drivers to brake suddenly or resort to evasive maneuvers, thus increasing the odds for accidents. Also, avoid cruising in the left lane, as this lane is reserved for passing only. Driving in the left lane may impede the flow of traffic and cause traffic to build up.

Safety should remain the top priority for all drivers who travel along crowded interstates. Remember to always stay focused, practice safe driving habits and be proactive. Unfortunately, there will always be those who take driving for granted or are distracted behind the wheel. Any Michigan resident who is injured or suffers the loss of a loved one in a car accident due to the negligence of another party can take action by consulting a legal representative. A skilled litigator can help victims and families pursue the compensation they deserve.
