Tips to avoid slip-and-fall accidents during the winter

On behalf of Bredell & Bredell | Jan 11, 2021 | Premises liability

Anyone who has lived in Michigan knows that the winters here can be harsh. Throughout the winter months, roads, parking lots and walkways are covered in snow and ice. These hazardous conditions greatly increase the risk of slipping and falling. Here’s how Michigan residents can reduce the likelihood of slip-and-fall accidents this winter.

The proper footwear can be vital this time of year. When walking through snow and ice, wear boots with textured or rough soles. These types of boots will give an individual more traction and often prevent a fall.

When possible, always use handrails. The purpose of a handrail is to keep a person upright and prevent a slip and fall. Indoors or outdoors, if a handrail is available, use it. It may be easier said than done, but try to avoid tensing up in the event of a fall. Tensing up can increase the likelihood of an injury.

Hazardous conditions may be present indoors in winter, too. Snow and ice that other people have tracked in will melt on floors and make for slippery conditions. Always be cautious when entering a building and be on the lookout for wet floors.

Also, business and property owners can help reduce slip-and-fall accidents by salting walkways or clearing away snow and ice. Winter in Michigan is a beautiful time of year, but it can also be dangerous. Those who are injured in slip-and-fall accidents that happened due to the negligence of another party can take legal action by contacting an attorney. A personal injury lawsuit, if successful, can provide victims with substantial compensation to help with lost wages and  medical expenses, among other documented monetary damages.
