Pontoon ride at Lake Allegan turns deadly

A 55-year-old Illinois woman died after her pontoon was hit by a motorboat on Lake Allegan last Sunday. The pontoon was being driven by her husband who also sustained injuries. They were both taken to Allegan General Hospital where the wife died. Her husband was released the next day.

Popular mud bog racer dead at 4-H fairgrounds

A West Olive, Michigan, man popular in the sport of mud bog racing died Saturday in an accident at the St. Joseph County 4-H fairgrounds. The 48-year-old man was accompanied that day by his son who, along with nearly 1,500 racing fans, witnessed the entire tragic event. It was the first race of the night.

Belleville teen girls killed in car accident

Two teenage women from Belleville were killed in a two-car crash at an intersection in Canton Township on July 24. The girls, ages 18 and 19, were passengers in a Chevrolet Cavalier driven by a 24-year-old Whittaker man. The crash occurred at approximately 2 a.m. at the intersection of Canton Center Road and Michigan Avenue.

Two men die in boat accident, fishing guide under investigation

A 71-year-old Northern Michigan man well-known in the Frankfort area died last Saturday, along with his friend and fishing buddy, also 71 years old. They were on an annual fishing trip in Lake of the Woods in Ontario and had hired a fishing guide from a local resort.

Tragedy strike group of Michigan motorcyclists

A group, comprised of a dozen motorcyclists, from Michigan was on its way back home when a horrific accident occurred last night. The accident took the life of one of the motorcyclists and injured nine others, only two of the 12 riders, all males on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, escaped the impact. Four of the injured were transported to area hospitals by medical rescue helicopters, two regular ambulances transported the less seriously injured to the hospital for treatment.

Decrease in Michigan accident fatalities better than national average

This week, the National Highway traffic Safety Administration announced that traffic fatalities had reached their lowest level since deadly car accident statistics began being tracked and recorded nationwide in 1949. The 23,310 traffic deaths in 2011 also marked a 1.7 percent decrease in traffic death compared to 2010. In Michigan the news was even better.

Michigan motorcyclist killed in collision with minivan

We have all seen the bumper stickers that implore us to "start seeing motorcycles." It seems like a simple request, and certainly good advice. As the weather in Michigan warms up more and more motorcyclists are bringing their bikes out of storage for the riding season. Motorists who have not been accustomed to looking out for motorcycles must once again pay full attention to ensure that they fulfilling their duty to drive safely and not endanger others who are using Michigan's roads.

Hit and run kills bicycle rider

A 21-year-old was struck by a hit and run driver in a fatal accident while riding his bicycle. The bicycle rider was airlifted to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after the 9:15 p.m. accident. The state police said that the driver of a white pickup truck hit the bicycle rider as he was heading westbound, then left the scene of the accident.
